Guinea Lawyers Strike Over ‘Arbitrary Arrests’
Lawyers in Guinea have begun a two-week strike to protest the arbitrary arrest of citizens in the country. The strike, led by the bar association, comes after two leaders of a citizens’ movement, Oumar Sylla and Mamadou Billo Bah, were arrested on July 9 for calling for a return to civilian rule.
The lawyers are protesting against arbitrary arrests and kidnappings followed by secret detention of Guinean citizens. Their spokesman, Gabriel Kamano, said the strike is a response to the military-led authorities’ crackdown on opposition voices.
The strike has the potential to disrupt a landmark trial over a 2009 massacre regarded as one of the darkest moments in Guinea’s history. The trial, which is expected to conclude on July 31, involves former dictator Moussa Dadis Camara and 11 other government and military officials accused of murder, sexual violence, torture, abduction, and kidnapping.
Despite the strike, authorities say the trial will go ahead as scheduled. However, it is unclear whether the strike will prevent the reading of the verdict. The military-led authorities have been cracking down on opposition voices since the 2021 coup that overthrew elected president Alpha Conde. Many opposition leaders have been arrested, brought before the courts, or forced into exile. In 2022, the authorities dissolved the FNDC, a civil society collective, after banning all demonstrations. In May, they withdrew the licenses of six radio and TV stations.
The strike by lawyers in Guinea is a bold move to challenge the military-led authorities’ crackdown on opposition voices. As the country waits for the verdict in the landmark trial, the strike has brought attention to the ongoing human rights abuses in Guinea.

ExxonMobil Guyana has announced plans to increase oil production from its Stabroek block by 18,000 barrels per day (bpd). The capacity of the Unity floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel will increase from 252,000 bpd to 270,000 bpd, pending approval from local authorities. ExxonMobil Guyana currently produces 665,000 bpd, and future developments include the Hammerhead project, which aims to produce 120,000-180,000 bpd. The company’s investment is set to further strengthen Guyana’s economy as it grows into a major oil producer.
In political developments, President Irfaan Ali has announced several benefits ahead of Guyana’s upcoming elections. The new incentives include free college tuition and a one-time cash handout of nearly $1,000 per household, benefiting 264,000 families. The minimum wage will also increase from $350 to $500 starting next year, aimed at reducing the cost of living for Guyanese citizens.
Guyana’s economy, bolstered by its growing oil sector, saw a remarkable 60% GDP growth in 2022, the highest in the world, according to the IMF. To further utilize oil revenues, the government is launching various infrastructure projects, including hospitals, schools, and a $1.9 billion gas-to-energy initiative.
At the same time, the 115th COTED meeting on agriculture in CARICOM is tackling challenges like climate change and underdeveloped agricultural value chains, working towards the 25 by 2025 Food Security Initiative.
