Phone Snatching Pandemic Hits London
London, the bustling capital of England, is facing a growing concern over phone snatching, with a staggering 151% increase in incidents over the past year ¹. This crime wave has left many residents and visitors vulnerable,
with thieves using bicycles and mopeds to snatch mobile phones from unsuspecting victims.
The City of London Police has launched a targeted operation to combat phone snatching, resulting in a significant reduction of 263 phone snatching offenses from June 2023 to date, compared to 516 reported cases during the same period last year ². Superintendent Neal Donohoe attributed the success to the hard work of officers and the introduction of a highly visible cycle team.
Despite this progress, phone snatching remains a pervasive issue, with 91,000 reports of phone theft made in 2022, averaging 248 daily incidents. Sadly, only 2% of these thefts resulted in the recovery of devices.
The impact of phone snatching extends beyond financial loss, with victims often feeling traumatized and violated.
The police acknowledge the difficulty in policing this crime but assure that daily operations continue, focusing on hotspot areas and key times.
To combat phone snatching, authorities advise the public to be aware of their surroundings, avoid using phones in public, and keep them secure. Registering phones with Immobilise and updating security settings can also
aid in recovery. In a notable arrest, Sonny Stringer, 28, was caught by police after a high-speed e-bike chase and found with 22 stolen phones.
He pleaded guilty to ten counts of theft and will be sentenced in August. As the phone snatching pandemic persists in London, awareness and vigilance are crucial in preventing these crimes. ExxonMobil Guyana has announced plans to increase oil production from its Stabroek block by 18,000 barrels per day (bpd). The capacity of the Unity floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel will increase from 252,000 bpd to 270,000 bpd, pending approval from local authorities. ExxonMobil Guyana currently produces 665,000 bpd, and future developments include the Hammerhead project, which aims to produce 120,000-180,000 bpd. The company’s investment is set to further strengthen Guyana’s economy as it grows into a major oil producer.
In political developments, President Irfaan Ali has announced several benefits ahead of Guyana’s upcoming elections. The new incentives include free college tuition and a one-time cash handout of nearly $1,000 per household, benefiting 264,000 families. The minimum wage will also increase from $350 to $500 starting next year, aimed at reducing the cost of living for Guyanese citizens.
Guyana’s economy, bolstered by its growing oil sector, saw a remarkable 60% GDP growth in 2022, the highest in the world, according to the IMF. To further utilize oil revenues, the government is launching various infrastructure projects, including hospitals, schools, and a $1.9 billion gas-to-energy initiative.
At the same time, the 115th COTED meeting on agriculture in CARICOM is tackling challenges like climate change and underdeveloped agricultural value chains, working towards the 25 by 2025 Food Security Initiative.
