Trump's Security Enhanced After Alleged Iranian Assassination Plot, According To US Officials

Former US President Donald Trump’s security detail was upgraded weeks ago after US authorities received intelligence regarding an alleged Iranian plot to kill him, according to national security officials.

While there is no known connection between the alleged Iranian plot and the recent assassination attempt on the former president in Pennsylvania, the revelation that security had been tightened raises further questions about how the gunman managed to get so close to Trump.

The US Secret Service and the Trump campaign were informed of the threat, triggering an increase in security measures, including extra counter-assault and counter-sniper agents, drones, and robotic dogs.

According to intelligence sources, the information about a potential Iranian operation was obtained through “human source intelligence” and came amid a notable increase in Iranian chatter regarding attacks against Trump.

Since ordering the drone strike assassination of Qassim Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Quds force, in Iraq in 2020, Trump and officials like his former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, have faced threats from Tehran.

The Iranian mission at the United Nations called the report “unsubstantiated and malicious,” adding that Trump was “a criminal who must be prosecuted and punished in a court of law”.

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the US Secret Service, said it and other agencies were “constantly receiving new potential threat information and taking action to adjust resources, as needed”.

The Trump campaign said it did not comment on security matters and referred questions to the Secret Service. Adrienne Watson, a spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council, said that US security officials had been “tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years”.

These threats arise from Iran’s desire to seek revenge for the killing of Soleimani,” she said. “We consider this a national and homeland security matter of the highest priority”.

Questions have swirled about how police officers and agents responsible for the rally at Butler County fairgrounds in Pennsylvania allowed the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, to get so close.

The director of the Secret Service admitted that local police were inside the building while Crooks was on its roof aiming at Trump 430 feet away.

President Joe Biden has ordered an independent review of how the gunman could have come so close to killing Trump, and the Secret Service also faces probes from Congress.

Diaspora Watch Newspaper-Vol.20

ExxonMobil Guyana has announced plans to increase oil production from its Stabroek block by 18,000 barrels per day (bpd). The capacity of the Unity floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel will increase from 252,000 bpd to 270,000 bpd, pending approval from local authorities. ExxonMobil Guyana currently produces 665,000 bpd, and future developments include the Hammerhead project, which aims to produce 120,000-180,000 bpd. The company’s investment is set to further strengthen Guyana’s economy as it grows into a major oil producer.

In political developments, President Irfaan Ali has announced several benefits ahead of Guyana’s upcoming elections. The new incentives include free college tuition and a one-time cash handout of nearly $1,000 per household, benefiting 264,000 families. The minimum wage will also increase from $350 to $500 starting next year, aimed at reducing the cost of living for Guyanese citizens.

Guyana’s economy, bolstered by its growing oil sector, saw a remarkable 60% GDP growth in 2022, the highest in the world, according to the IMF. To further utilize oil revenues, the government is launching various infrastructure projects, including hospitals, schools, and a $1.9 billion gas-to-energy initiative.

At the same time, the 115th COTED meeting on agriculture in CARICOM is tackling challenges like climate change and underdeveloped agricultural value chains, working towards the 25 by 2025 Food Security Initiative.
