American Woman Found Chained To Tree In India, Husband Sought
A mysterious case has unfolded in India where an American woman, Lalita Kayi, 50, was found chained to a tree in a dense forest in Maharashtra. She was rescued after shepherds heard her cries for help and alerted the police. “I saw that one of her legs was tied to a tree.
She was screaming like an animal,” said Pandurang Gawkar, a cow herder who found Kayi. Kayi alleged that her husband chained her to the tree and left her to die without food or water. “I am a victim and survived. But he ran away from here,” she scribbled in a note to the police.
Police have registered a case of attempted murder against her husband, identified as Satish, and are investigating the matter further. “We have been unable to verify her claims of going without food and water for 40 days,” said a police official.
Kayi, a ballet dancer and yoga practitioner from America, moved to India 10 years ago to study yoga and meditation. She met her husband in Tamil Nadu, but police believe they fell out.
The US embassy in Delhi has refused to comment on the case, citing the US Privacy Act. Kayi’s physical health has improved, and she has been moved to a psychiatric facility for further treatment. “Currently, her health is stable,” said Dr. Sanghamitra Phule, hospital superintendent. “She is taking medication, eating, and interacting with people.”
