Military Leaders Of Niger, Mali And Burkina Faso Rule Out Returning To The ECOWAS Regional Bloc

The military leaders of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have announced that they will not return to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc. This decision was made during their first summit in Niamey, Niger, following their withdrawal from ECOWAS in January.

The leaders of the three countries cited ECOWAS’s failure to meet its mandate and accused the bloc of being manipulated by foreign powers, including former colonial ruler France. They also expressed their commitment to consolidating their own union, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which was created last year. The decision is seen as a significant blow to ECOWAS, which has been struggling to maintain unity among its member states.

The bloc has been criticized for its inability to effectively address the political and security challenges facing the region. Analysts say the move will further deepen the divisions within ECOWAS and could lead to a permanent split in the bloc. The two meetings, one held by the three military junta-led countries and the other by ECOWAS, highlight the deep divisions within the regional bloc.

The Alliance of Sahel States has been touted as a tool for the three countries to seek new partnerships with countries like Russia and cement their independence from France.

The three leaders have committed to creating a regional parliament and a bank similar to those operated by ECOWAS, and have pledged to pool their military resources to fight insecurity in their countries. The move is also seen as a sign of the growing frustration among West African citizens with ECOWAS’s inability to address their concerns. Many citizens feel that the bloc represents only the interests of its member states’ leaders and not those of the masses.

We also examine the intricate relationships between diaspora, globalization, and power, as seen in the impact of USAID funds on terrorism, including Boko Haram, and the freezing of mineral exports in Malawi.
