Turkey To Join South Africa’s Genocide Lawsuit Against Israel At UN Tribunal
Turkey will submit a request to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Wednesday to join South Africa’s genocide lawsuit against Israel, according to a Turkish official. The request for intervention will be presented to the ICJ in The Hague.
Turkey accuses Israel of committing genocide through its military actions in Gaza, a claim that Israel vehemently denies. Israel asserts that its actions in Gaza were a legitimate defensive response to Hamas militants following their October 7 attack, which killed about 1,200 people and took 250 hostages.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, frequently likening Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler and accusing Israel of committing genocide. Erdogan has also criticized Western nations for their support of Israel.
South Africa initiated the case against Israel late last year, accusing it of breaching the Genocide Convention through its military actions in Gaza. Other countries, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Spain, and Palestinian officials, have also requested to join the case.
If accepted, Turkey will be allowed to submit written observations and participate in public hearings. The ICJ has not yet ruled on these requests. Preliminary hearings have already occurred in the case against Israel, but the court is expected to take several years to reach a final decision.
Turkey and Israel, once allies, have experienced turbulent relations since Erdogan assumed power in 2003, characterized by periods of intense conflict and attempts at reconciliation. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has disrupted recent efforts to normalize relations.
