Favour Ofili: Tears Of A Nigerian Heroine
I weep with you, Favour Chukwuka Ofili, great daughter of Onitsha-Ugbo, whose dreams were shattered by the very hands that should have lifted you up. Your tears are my tears, our collective tears, for the potential greatness that was callously denied.
Born on December 31, 2002, Favour is a Nigerian track and field sprinter queen, whose achievements are a testament to her dedication and passion. She is the 2019 African Games Silver medallist in the 400 metres, 2022 Commonwealth Games Silver medallist in the 200 metres, and holds multiple gold and bronze medals in various international competitions.
But Favour’s story is not just one of triumph; it is also a tale of heartbreak and betrayal. Despite qualifying for the Olympics, her name was omitted from the 100m event, a devastating blow that would have crushed a lesser spirit. Yet, she persevered, finishing sixth in the final of the women’s 200 metres at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Favour’s achievement is a testament to her strength and resilience, but it is also a stark reminder of the systemic failures that threaten to snuff out our brightest stars. Nigeria, a country that should have nurtured and celebrated her, instead let her down.
As I write this, my heart bleeds for Favour, for the what-ifs, for the possibilities that were denied her. I urge her to consider abandoning a country that does not appreciate her efforts and seek a nation that will cherish her talents.
