Afenifere Condemns Calls for Military Takeover, Urges Preservation of Democracy

The Pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organisation, Afenifere, has strongly condemned calls for a military takeover of power in Nigeria. In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, the group denounced individuals who, under the guise of recent hunger protests, are advocating for an unconstitutional change of government.

Afenifere expressed concern over the violent turn of protests in some states, resulting in destruction, looting, and loss of lives. The group criticized the brazen display of flags associated with Russia or the Nigerian Army, viewing it as an attempt to incite a military takeover. “Whether the flags belonged to Russia or the army, the message is more or less the same – inciting the taking-over of government through an unconstitutional means,” the statement reads.

The group emphasized that democracy, despite its challenges, remains the best option for Nigeria due to its inherent characteristics of people-centric governance and elasticity. Afenifere urged that various tendencies operate within the ambit of the law, adding that democracy “should not be truncated for any reason”.

Comrade Ajayi questioned the logic of seeking military or foreign intervention to address hunger and deprivation, stating that such actions would be self-delusional and unlikely to yield automatic solutions. “Since the protest was ostensibly to push for an end to the hunger and sundry other deprivations in the land, how come they look in the direction of either the military or a foreign power?” he asked.

Afenifere’s stance is clear: Nigeria’s democratic dispensation must be preserved, and any attempts to truncate it through unconstitutional means will be firmly opposed.
