African Votes, American Impact: Shaping Africa-US Relations

As the 2024 US Presidential Election approaches, the African diaspora in the US stands at a critical juncture, poised to shape the future of Africa-US relations. With over 2.3 million African immigrants residing in the US, this demographic wields significant influence over policy decisions that impact the continent.
The African vote has been a decisive factor in US elections, with African Americans voting overwhelmingly for progressive candidates who support policies beneficial to Africa. The interests of Africa and African Americans are inextricably linked. The next US President will have far-reaching implications for Africa-US relations, trade, and development.
On trade, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a transformative opportunity for US-Africa trade. The next President must support policies that promote US investment in Africa, such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). AGOA has been instrumental in increasing US trade with Africa, with US exports to Africa growing by 23% in 2020.
On development, the US has a long history of supporting Africa’s development through initiatives like PEPFAR and the Millennium Challenge Corporation. PEPFAR has saved millions of lives in Africa since its inception in 2003, with over $80 billion invested in global health programs. The Millennium Challenge Corporation has invested over $10 billion in Africa’s development priorities, such as education and healthcare, since its inception in 2004.

Other critical issues influencing African votes include: — Immigration policy, with Trump’s administration criticized for its harsh stance — Racial justice, with Harris’s record on police reform and criminal justice reform — Education, with Harris’s plans for debt-free college and increased funding for HBCUs — Healthcare, with Harris’s support for the Affordable Care Act and expanded access — Climate change, with Harris’s climate action plan focusing on environmental justice and climate resilience — Foreign policy, with Harris’s commitment to multilateralism and collaborative approach — Economic empowerment, with Harris’s support for African American and immigrant-owned businesses.
In conclusion, registered African voters in the US have a critical voice in shaping Africa-US relations. They must exercise their franchise judiciously, scrutinizing the candidates’ policies and track records on Africa. The future of Africa-US relations hangs in the balance. Will the African diaspora seize this opportunity to shape the future of Africa-US relations, or will their voices be silenced? The choice is theirs.
