Body Of Missing Augusta Woman Shekema Toran Found In Atlanta-Area Parking Lot
The family of 36-year-old Shekema Toran, a missing African American woman from Augusta, Georgia, has confirmed that her body was discovered in a car parked in an Atlanta-area lot. Toran was last seen on Wednesday and was believed to be heading towards Atlanta, as her phone’s location was last traced there.
The body was found in a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a Kroger shopping center on Wesley Chapel Road in Decatur on Sunday. Although the cause of death has not been released, the woman was identified on Monday as Toran.
Authorities have been seeking Toran’s boyfriend, Biarritz “Danate” Martin, for questioning since her disappearance. Martin’s whereabouts are currently unknown, and authorities urge anyone with information regarding the case to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. According to Toran’s mother, an argument erupted between Toran and Martin at her home, leading to Martin being asked to leave. However, he returned two hours later to pick up Toran, and she has not been heard from since. Toran’s mother received text messages that seemed uncharacteristic of her daughter, further fueling concerns.
Deputies investigating the case reached out to Martin’s roommates, who confirmed that Martin was home on Tuesday night, but Toran was not with him. Despite multiple attempts to contact Martin, deputies received no response. Eventually, Martin returned a deputy’s call but refused to let them speak with Toran, repeatedly saying, “Wake up,” and smacking the car’s dash or seat. This odd behavior continued for about ten minutes before Martin disconnected the call and did not answer subsequent calls.
Toran’s family members were actively searching for her on Friday, deeply worried and uncertain about the situation. Her brother, Travoun West, expressed his distress, saying, “I’m really lost. I don’t know what to do for real.”
The last known vehicle associated with Toran was a white 2004 Ford F-250 with Georgia license plate RJW1158. Authorities have released a photo of Martin, describing him as 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 160 pounds.

ExxonMobil Guyana has announced plans to increase oil production from its Stabroek block by 18,000 barrels per day (bpd). The capacity of the Unity floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel will increase from 252,000 bpd to 270,000 bpd, pending approval from local authorities. ExxonMobil Guyana currently produces 665,000 bpd, and future developments include the Hammerhead project, which aims to produce 120,000-180,000 bpd. The company’s investment is set to further strengthen Guyana’s economy as it grows into a major oil producer.
In political developments, President Irfaan Ali has announced several benefits ahead of Guyana’s upcoming elections. The new incentives include free college tuition and a one-time cash handout of nearly $1,000 per household, benefiting 264,000 families. The minimum wage will also increase from $350 to $500 starting next year, aimed at reducing the cost of living for Guyanese citizens.
Guyana’s economy, bolstered by its growing oil sector, saw a remarkable 60% GDP growth in 2022, the highest in the world, according to the IMF. To further utilize oil revenues, the government is launching various infrastructure projects, including hospitals, schools, and a $1.9 billion gas-to-energy initiative.
At the same time, the 115th COTED meeting on agriculture in CARICOM is tackling challenges like climate change and underdeveloped agricultural value chains, working towards the 25 by 2025 Food Security Initiative.
