CARICOM Chair Cautions Caribbean Region On Mpox Outbreak

The Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dickon Mitchell, who is also the Prime Minister of Grenada, has joined the growing call for increased vigilance across the Caribbean region in response to the recent declaration of the Mpox outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Mitchell urged citizens to stay informed through regular updates from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and local health authorities, emphasizing the importance of being alert to unusual rashes or lesions, especially for those with travel history to affected areas.

The CARICOM Chair also stressed the need for community awareness in containing potential outbreaks, stating that “reporting any suspicious cases to local health authorities is a critical step in allowing for further epidemiological investigation.”

To tackle the outbreak, the CARICOM Secretariat will work closely with CARPHA to ensure a well-coordinated response both regionally and internationally. CARPHA, in collaboration with Member States and CARICOM IMPACS, will monitor incoming passengers and facilitate rapid identification of potential cases.

Mitchell emphasized the importance of collective action, stating that “through our collective efforts and heightened awareness, the Caribbean Community can effectively safeguard the health and well-being of our communities against this public health concern.”

In a world where global connections are redefining identities, cultures, and nations, the 36th edition of Diaspora Watch delves into the complexities of transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, and creolization.

This edition brings together diverse perspectives on diaspora, from the experiences of African diasporic communities to the evolving notion of diaspora itself.

As we reflect on the changing landscapes of diaspora, we are reminded of the power of global connections in shaping our understanding of identity, culture, and belonging.

From Peter Obi’s advocacy for electoral transparency in Nigeria to the trailblazing leadership of Aisha Braveboy in Maryland politics, this edition of Diaspora Watch celebrates the achievements and contributions of diasporic communities worldwide.

We also examine the intricate relationships between diaspora, globalization, and power, as seen in the impact of USAID funds on terrorism, including Boko Haram, and the freezing of mineral exports in Malawi.

Furthermore, we explore the role of social media in transforming lives, as exemplified by Peller’s journey from carpentry to earning millions on TikTok.
