Charly Boy Slams Renaming of National Theatre After Wole Soyinka, Withdraws Respect
Controversial entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has expressed his disapproval over the renaming of the National Theatre after Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka. The iconic building was recently renamed Wole Soyinka Theatre in honor of the celebrated writer’s 90th birthday.
In a statement released to the press, Charly Boy lambasted the decision, describing it as a “misguided move” that undermines the country’s cultural heritage. He argued that the National Theatre, a symbol of Nigeria’s rich cultural history, should not be renamed after any individual, no matter how deserving.
“While I have immense respect for Professor Soyinka’s achievements and contributions to Nigerian literature, I strongly believe that renaming the National Theatre after him is a misplaced priority,” Charly Boy said. “The National Theatre represents our collective cultural identity, and altering its name diminishes its significance.”
Charly Boy’s reaction has sparked a heated debate in the Nigerian entertainment industry, with some supporting his stance while others believe the renaming is a fitting tribute to Soyinka’s legacy. The controversy has also raised questions about the role of government in preserving cultural heritage and the importance of national symbols.
In a surprising turn, Charly Boy announced that he would be withdrawing his respect for Soyinka, citing the renaming of the National Theatre as a “betrayal of trust.” This move has shocked many in the industry, given Charly Boy’s previous admiration for the literary icon.

Diaspora Diva – Duckie Thot
Duckie Thot has become one of the most recognisable faces in global fashion, admired for her striking beauty and strong presence on international runways. Born Nyadak Thot on October 23, 1995, in Melbourne, she is of South Sudanese heritage and grew up in Australia after her family fled conflict in South Sudan before her birth.
Thot first gained public attention in 2013 when she competed in Australia’s Next Top Model, finishing as one of the top contestants. Al-though the exposure helped launch her career, she initially struggled to secure opportunities in Australia, which she attributed to limit-ed representation for models of colour in the local fashion industry.
Determined to pursue her dream, she later relocated to New York, where her career quickly gained momentum. A breakthrough moment came when she was invited to work with Kanye West, leading to her runway debut at the Yeezy Spring/Summer 2017 show. Since then, she has walked for major fashion houses and featured in campaigns for brands including Fenty Beauty, Balmain and Moschino.
Her profile rose further when she starred as Alice in the 2018 Pirelli Calendar in-spired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The project, which featured an all-Black cast, celebrated diversity in fashion and helped cement Thot’s reputation as one of the industry’s most influen-tial models.Beyond modelling, Thot has also been vocal about di-versity and inclusion in the beauty and fashion world. Having once struggled to find makeup suited to her skin tone on photo shoots, she now advocates for broader repre-sentation behind the scenes and on the runway, inspiring a new generation of models to see themselves reflected

The Pitt, The Studio Dominate 2025 Emmy Awards
Hollywood’s biggest television stars gathered on Sunday night for the 2025 Emmy Awards, where two productions, The Pitt and The Studio, emerged as the night’s biggest winners.
The Pitt, a gripping medical drama set in a bustling emergency room, clinched the coveted Best Drama Series, while The Studio, a satirical comedy about Hollywood politics, not only won Best Comedy Series but also shattered Emmy records with a clean sweep across multiple categories.
In a defining moment of the ceremony, veteran actor Noah Wyle earned his first-ever Emmy after decades in television, winning Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in The Pitt.
Wyle, visibly moved, dedicated the award to healthcare workers worldwide, describing the show’s success as “a reflection of the courage and sacrifice of those who save lives every day.”
Seth Rogen’s The Studio proved unstoppable in the comedy category, taking home 13 trophies — the highest number of wins for a comedy series in a single year, according to the Television Academy.
Rogen, who co-created and starred in the show, also walked away with Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, his first Emmy.
He called the triumph “the proudest moment” of his career.
Critics have hailed The Studio for its sharp wit and insider satire, offering audiences a humorous but piercing look into Hollywood’s inner workings.
The series’ record-breaking feat now places it among the most celebrated comedies in Emmy history.
Industry watchers say the dual success of The Pitt and The Studio signals a shift in Hollywood storytelling, with both shows reflecting real-world struggles and triumphs in institutions — healthcare and entertainment — that resonate with global audiences.
The victories came against formidable contenders including Severance and Abbott Elementary, underscoring the appetite for fresh narratives that balance cultural depth with entertainment.
As the night drew to a close, the Emmy spotlight rested squarely on The Pitt and The Studio — productions that not only entertained millions but also reinforced television’s enduring power to mirror society.
