Ex-Head Of State Urges Vigilance To Sustain Nigeria’s Democracy
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has emphasized the need for Nigerians to nurture and protect the country’s democracy, warning that democracy is not a destination but a journey that requires constant vigilance. Speaking at a gathering of civil society organizations, General Abdulsalami noted that Nigeria’s democracy is still fragile and needs to be sustained through active participation of citizens, protection of human rights, and the rule of law. “Nigeria’s democracy is still in its formative years, and we must be careful not to derail it,” he said. “We must continue to nurture it, protect it, and ensure that it serves the purpose for which it was established.
“The former Head of State emphasized the im-portance of free and fair elections, saying that the credibility of the elector-al process is crucial to the survival of democracy. He also stressed the need for the media to play its role in holding leaders account-able and promoting transparency. General Abdulsalami’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria is grappling with numerous challenges, including insecurity, corruption, and economic instability.
The country’s democracy has been tested in recent times, with many calling for reforms to ad-dress the underlying issues. The former Head of State’s call for vigilance and nurturing of democracy is seen as a wake-up call to Nigerians to take their civic responsibilities seriously and ensure that the country’s democracy is not derailed. In his words, “Democracy is not a spectator sport. It requires the active participation of all citizens. We must all be involved in the process, and we must all be vigilant in protecting our democracy.”

It was a night of glamour and excitement as the Austin Branch of the People’s Club of Nigeria International (PCNI) held its end of year party on Saturday, November 30, 2024.Diaspora Watch reports that the well-attended event, which took place at Wingate by Wyndham Round Rock Hotel and Conference Center, Texas, was a celebration of the branch’s achievements and a show of appreciation to God for His blessings throughout the year.
