Four British Nigerians Who Won UK Parliament Seats
The recent UK parliamentary elections saw four British-Nigerians emerge victorious, winning seats in the UK parliament. The elections, held on July 4, 2024, resulted in a landslide victory for the Labour Party, with the party securing 412 seats out of 650. Kemi Badenoch, a renowned British-Nigerian, won her seat in North West Essex, retaining her position as a Conservative Party member of Parliament despite the party’s overall loss.
Bayo Alaba, a British-Nigerian businessman, won the Southend East and Rochford seat for the Labour Party, securing 15,395 votes against his closest rival’s 11,368 votes. Alaba, a former Parachute Regiment soldier and youth mentor, currently serves as the first black councillor for the London Borough of Redbridge.
Taiwo Owatemi, a former Member of Parliament of Nigerian descent, won the Coventry North West seat for the Labour Party, polling 19,696 votes to defeat her main rival’s 8,522 votes. Chi Onwurah, another British-Nigerian, was re-elected as an MP to represent Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West for the Labour Party, securing 18,875 votes in the landslide win.

Maureen studied BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing at Southampton Solent University and currently lives in London, United Kingdom. She is also a volunteer at the British Red Cross, where she selflessly gives her time to support those in need.
In addition to her work in the UK, Maureen founded REENS CARE, a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Nigeria that provides vital support to indigent children.
