High School Football Player Loses Leg While Rescuing Mom From Car Accident
Tragedy has struck the life of 15-year-old De’Lon Jackson, a high school football player from Riverdale, Georgia, who had big dreams of reaching the NFL.
After finishing football practice at Charles Drew High School, De’Lon received a distress call from his mother, Raven Simone, who was involved in a serious accident while on her way to pick him up.
Without hesitation, De’Lon rushed to the scene to help his mom, determined to save her. “I’m running… I see what happened. I see the truck that’s in the grass,” Jackson told 11Alive. “My first thought was getting my mom out of the car.” After rescuing her, De’Lon was struck by a car and severely injured, resulting in the amputation of his right leg and injuries to his left leg.
De’Lon’s mother, Raven Simone, described the moment, “I was walking around the back, and you hear a car coming, and as they’re coming, you can hear my car getting smacked. And I turn around and say, ‘Where’s my son?’ And I see him way up in the middle of the street, and his right leg is twisted.”
De’Lon was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where doctors had to amputate his right leg. His left leg was also injured in the accident. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover De’Lon’s medical expenses, raising nearly $8,000 of its $100,000 goal.
Despite the life-changing event, De’Lon remains thankful that both he and his mom are alive. His love for his mom remains stronger than ever, saying, “I love her to death. I don’t know what I’d do without her. I don’t know what I’d do.” De’Lon’s dreams of playing in the NFL have changed, but his courage and selflessness in the face of tragedy have inspired many.
The incident is still under investigation, and authorities have yet to release a full report or determine if the driver who hit De’Lon will face charges. De’Lon’s mom is now focused on caring for him and her other children, as he will need additional rehabilitation.

ExxonMobil Guyana has announced plans to increase oil production from its Stabroek block by 18,000 barrels per day (bpd). The capacity of the Unity floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel will increase from 252,000 bpd to 270,000 bpd, pending approval from local authorities. ExxonMobil Guyana currently produces 665,000 bpd, and future developments include the Hammerhead project, which aims to produce 120,000-180,000 bpd. The company’s investment is set to further strengthen Guyana’s economy as it grows into a major oil producer.
In political developments, President Irfaan Ali has announced several benefits ahead of Guyana’s upcoming elections. The new incentives include free college tuition and a one-time cash handout of nearly $1,000 per household, benefiting 264,000 families. The minimum wage will also increase from $350 to $500 starting next year, aimed at reducing the cost of living for Guyanese citizens.
Guyana’s economy, bolstered by its growing oil sector, saw a remarkable 60% GDP growth in 2022, the highest in the world, according to the IMF. To further utilize oil revenues, the government is launching various infrastructure projects, including hospitals, schools, and a $1.9 billion gas-to-energy initiative.
At the same time, the 115th COTED meeting on agriculture in CARICOM is tackling challenges like climate change and underdeveloped agricultural value chains, working towards the 25 by 2025 Food Security Initiative.
