Nigeria’s Patriots Urge President Tinubu To Enact New Constitution
A group of prominent Nigerians, led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to initiate a process for creating a new constitution. They argue that the current constitution is inadequate and responsible for the country’s prevailing challenges.
After meeting with President Tinubu at the State House, the group, which includes Senator Shehu Sani, Mike Ozekhome, Labaran Maku, Senator Ben Obi, and Segun Osoba, emphasized the need for a new constitution that considers Nigeria’s diversity.
They proposed that President Tinubu send a bill to the National Assembly to establish a constituent assembly, tasked with drafting a new constitution within nine months. The draft should then be put to a national referendum, allowing citizens to shape their new constitution and address the country’s challenges.
The Patriots believe a new constitution is essential for Nigeria’s progress and that the current one has failed to deliver the promised land. They urge President Tinubu to take immediate action to create a more inclusive and effective constitution.
