Rivers State Electoral Body Fixes October 5 For Local Govt Elections Amid Political Crisis
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced October 5, 2024, as the date for the conduct of local government elections across the state. The announcement comes amid a leadership crisis in the councils, with a contested extension of the tenure of council chairpersons, vice chairpersons, and councilors.
The Rivers State government has appointed new caretaker chairmen for the 23 local government areas, following the expiration of the previous chairmen’s tenures.
However, this move has been met with violence, resulting in three deaths, including a police officer. The police have blockaded council premises across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) to maintain public safety and prevent further escalation. The Rivers State Assembly passed the Local Government Amendment Bill into law, which would have granted the Assembly the power to extend the tenure of council chairpersons, vice chairpersons, and councilors if elections couldn’t be held before the end of their three-year term.
However, the court struck down the amended law, and an appeal was filed. RSIEC chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), announced the election date during a stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt, emphasizing that the commission is determined to conduct free, fair, and credible elections in the 23 local councils. He urged political parties to play by the rules and guidelines, ensuring a hitch-free process.
Stakeholders at the meeting encouraged the commission to ensure a level playing ground for all political parties, with the Nigerian Bar Association, Port Harcourt Branch, expressing its readiness to partner with RSIEC to ensure a successful local government election.
