Young Kenyans Vow To Defy Ban On Protests

Despite a police ban on protests in the capital, young Kenyans are vowing to continue their anti-government demonstrations.

The protests, which began in response to a controversial finance bill that proposes higher taxes amidst a cost-of-living crisis and ballooning public debt, have resulted in at least 50 deaths since June 18, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

The police ban was announced hours before a planned protest, in which demonstrators were expected to march to the president’s office calling for his resignation over poor governance. However, protesters were undeterred, with many taking to social media to vow to continue their demonstrations.

The ban follows a month of protests, which have left businesses counting losses after looting and burnings. Police have used tear gas to disperse crowds, and clashes have resulted in injuries and deaths. Despite this, young Kenyans remain determined to make their voices heard.

The protests began as a response to the finance bill, which proposes higher taxes on basic goods such as fuel and food, as well as a levy on all taxpayers to fund a housing scheme. The government says the taxes will help create jobs and reduce public borrowing, but protesters argue that the bill will only exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis.

As the protests continue, there are concerns about the impact on the economy and public safety. Many businesses have been forced to close, and there are reports of looting and vandalism. However, protesters argue that their actions are necessary to bring attention to the government’s poor governance and the need for change.

The situation remains tense, with police and protesters facing off in the streets. Despite the ban on protests, it is clear that young Kenyans will not be silenced. Their determination to make their voices heard is a testament to
their desire for change and their refusal to accept the status quo.
