5 Things Kids Notice About Adults Without Them Realizing It

Children are often more observant than adults give them credit for. They pick up on subtle cues, behaviors, and attitudes that shape their understanding of the world and themselves. Here are five things kids notice about adults without them realizing it:

1. How you feel about your partner, co-parent, or their other caregivers

Kids notice nonverbal cues, criticism, and negative remarks, which can affect their sense of safety and emotional connection. Clinical psychologist Jazmine McCoy advises speaking highly of the other parent and caregivers, even when they’re not present, to help the child feel safe and confident. McCoy suggests saying positive things like, “Wow, Mommy planned a fun adventure for us!” or “This dinner came out great. Daddy is a great chef!”

2. How you feel about your body

Children absorb comments and body language related to body image, learning what is considered desirable or undesirable. Registered dietitian Alyssa Miller notes that kids can read body language and pick up on subtle actions, drawing conclusions about bodies. She encourages adults to be mindful of their own body image and self-talk, as children tend to be more perceptive than adults give them credit for. Miller adds that adults’ body language and comments can influence children’s self-esteem and body confidence.

3. What you actually value

Kids observe actions and behaviors, drawing conclusions about what is important, which may differ from what adults say they value. Clinical psychologist Laura Markham emphasizes the importance of articulating values to children and applying them to daily life, as kids learn by observing adult behavior. Markham notes that adults often unintentionally prioritize winning or achievement over teamwork or effort, which can confuse children.

4. Your self-compassion (or lack thereof)

Children learn from how adults handle mistakes, selftalk, and perfectionism, developing their own approach to resilience and self-criticism. Miller notes that adults who are gentle with themselves and admit mistakes teach kids valuable lessons about resilience and learning from errors. She adds that kids pick up on how adults handle mistakes, self-talk, unrealistic expectations, and perfectionistic tendencies.

5. Your relationship with food

Kids internalize eating habits, comments, and attitudes towards food, shaping their own relationship with food and potentially influencing unhealthy eating habits. Miller advises modeling a balanced and positive approach to food to help children develop healthy eating habits. She notes that research shows kids tend to eat the same foods their parents do, both as children and as adults.

By being aware of these subtle influences, adults can intentionally model positive behaviors and attitudes, shaping a healthier and more supportive environment for children to grow and develop.
