Uganda Protest Organisers Playing With Fire, President Warns
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has warned that protest organisers planning an anti-corruption march to parliament on Tuesday are “playing with fire.” The march, which has been banned by police, is aimed at demanding an end to corruption in government.
Despite the ban, protest organisers have vowed to proceed with the demonstration, citing their constitutional right to peaceful protest. The planned march is partly inspired by recent protests in neighbouring Kenya, which forced President William Ruto to drop plans to increase taxes and have since morphed into calls for his resignation.
In a televised address, President Museveni accused some protest organisers of working with foreign interests to cause chaos in Uganda. He warned that the government would not tolerate the protest, stating that “we are busy producing wealth… and you here want to disturb us. You are playing with fire because we cannot allow you to disturb us.”
The protest organisers, however, remain defiant, with one of the main leaders, Louez Aloikin Opolose, stating that they do not need police permission to carry out a peaceful demonstration. “It is our constitutional right,” he said.
The planned protest has highlighted the ongoing issue of corruption in Uganda, which ranks low on Transparency International’s corruption perceptions index. The protesters aim to march past parliament, which they accuse of tolerating corruption.
The situation has drawn parallels with neighbouring Kenya, where anti-corruption protests have turned violent, resulting in at least 50 deaths and 413 injuries since June 18. The protests in Kenya started as non-violent demonstrations against tax rises but have escalated into broader anti-government protests.
As tensions rise in Uganda, the international community is watching with concern. The UK and US governments have already imposed sanctions on Uganda’s parliamentary speaker, Anita Annet Among, and two government ministers, Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu, over corruption allegations.
