Hunger Protest: Six Ways Peaceful Protests Turn Violent — Shehu Sani

As Nigeria prepares for a nationwide protest against hunger and other national concerns, former Senator Shehu Sani has identified six factors that can turn peaceful protests violent. In a tweet on July 28, 2024, Sani warned that the shooting of protesters by armed security operatives, among other reasons, can escalate peaceful protests into violent ones.

With the protest scheduled to take place from August 1 to 10, 2024, Sani’s warning comes at a critical time. The protest, organized by some Nigerians, aims to pressure the President Bola Tinubu-led government to address the hunger crisis and other pressing national issues.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central District in the 8th National Assembly, listed the following factors that can turn peaceful protests violent:

1. Armed security forces shooting at protesters with live ammunition.

2. Thugs among the protesters attacking and looting shops, offices, homes, and public facilities.

3. Sponsored thugs attacking peaceful protesters.

4. Protesters’ refusal to obey their leaders, leading to a loss of control.

5. The clashing of two opposing protest groups. 6. The infiltration of peaceful protesters by others with ulterior motives.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has also urged the Federal Government to listen to the demands of the protest organizers, warning that threatening protesters could exacerbate the situation.

As Nigeria teeters on the brink of widespread protests, it is crucial to heed Sani’s warning and ensure that peaceful protests remain peaceful. The government must address the legitimate concerns of the protesters, and security operatives must exercise restraint in their handling of the protests.
