Sports Minister Apologizes For Nigeria’s Olympic Failure
The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has issued a public apology to Nigerians over the country’s poor performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where the team failed to win a single medal despite a €12 billion budget approved by President Bola Tinubu.
Enoh acknowledged that the team’s performance fell short of expectations, saying, “The Olympic Games, Paris 2024, have ended, and I accept that our performance should have been a lot better. It fell short of our objectives, expectations, and hopes of Nigerians. I must apologize to our compatriots”.
The minister explained that he had inherited a challenging situation, with only a few months to prepare for the Olympics, and that despite efforts to drive forward the performance of athletes and coaches, the team’s underwhelming performance was “puzzling.”
Enoh promised a comprehensive review to identify areas for improvement, including evaluating athlete preparation, coaching, and administrative staff roles, while ensuring lessons are learned and improvements made.
He noted that the ministry would “swing into a review process” to examine the competition readiness of every athlete, including their injury and medical history, as well as the roles of coaches and administrative staff.
Enoh expressed determination to turn the “disastrous outcome” of the 2024 Olympics into a positive force for Nigerian sports, saying, “Let’s turn the disastrous outcome of the 2024 Olympics to a huge positive for Nigerian sports.”
