Ex-President Faces Death Penalty Fears In Niger

Lawyers for ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum have expressed concerns that he may face treason charges, which could carry the death penalty, a year after the coup that removed him from power.
According to Bazoum’s legal team, the current military junta is seeking to prosecute him on charges of treason, which would be a severe escalation of his treatment.
Bazoum has been under house arrest since the coup in July 2023, and his lawyers argue that he is being unfairly targeted by the new regime.
The development has sparked international concern, with human rights groups and diplomatic circles calling for restraint and due process.
The situation in Niger remains volatile, with the military junta struggling to consolidate power and address the country’s pressing security and economic challenges.
Bazoum’s fate remains uncertain, as the country teeters on the brink of further instability
