Russian Court Sentences US Citizen Ksenia Karelina To 12 Years In Prison For Treason Over $51 Charity Donation
A Russian court has sentenced Ksenia Karelina, a dual American and Russian citizen, to 12 years in prison for treason after she donated $51 to a charity supporting Ukraine. Karelina, an amateur ballerina, pleaded guilty last week following a trial conducted behind closed doors.
Karelina was arrested in January during a family visit to Yekaterinburg, Russia, and was accused of raising funds for a Ukrainian organization that supplies arms to the Ukrainian military. The charity, Razom, expressed shock and dismay upon learning of Karelina’s arrest.
The Yekaterinburg court found her guilty of high treason and sentenced her to serve time in a general regime penal colony. Prosecutors had originally sought a 15-year prison sentence.
Karelina’s boyfriend, boxer Chris van Heerden, described the trial as distressing and anxiety-inducing. Her case has drawn attention due to its similarity to that of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was tried for espionage in the same court and recently freed in a prisoner exchange.
Karelina’s sentence has raised concerns about the severity of Russia’s crackdown on perceived support for Ukraine.
