Trump Requests Postponement Of Sentencing In Hush Money Case Until After Presidential Election
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is requesting that the judge in his New York hush money case postpone his sentencing until after the November presidential election. In a letter released on Thursday, Trump’s legal team argued that sentencing him on September 18, approximately seven weeks before the election, would constitute interference with the election process.
Trump’s attorneys, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, wrote that a delay would also give Trump time to consider his options after the trial judge, Juan M. Merchan, decides on September 16 whether to dismiss the case based on a U.S. Supreme Court ruling from July concerning presidential immunity. Merchan is still deciding whether to dismiss the case on immunity grounds.
If Merchan denies Trump’s dismissal request, Trump’s legal team will need “sufficient time to evaluate and pursue state and federal appellate options,” they said. The Supreme Court’s immunity ruling limits the prosecution of former presidents for official acts and restricts the use of such acts as evidence in cases involving unofficial actions.
Trump’s lawyers contend that, given this ruling, the jury in the hush money case should not have been presented with evidence such as testimony from former White House staffers about Trump’s response to media coverage of the Daniels payment. This evidence, they argue, was improperly used to connect Trump’s official actions to the alleged unofficial act of making a hush money payment.
This request comes after Judge Merchan denied Trump’s latest motion requesting he recuse himself from the case due to a potential conflict of interest, as his daughter works as a Democratic political consultant, including for Kamala Harris during her 2020 presidential campaign. Trump’s lawyers reiterated this claim in their letter, stating that the judge’s continued involvement in the case could impact the outcome.

Zenith Bank Plc has announced a Diaspora engagement programme aimed at providing essential banking and identity services to Nigerians residing in the United States, with activities scheduled to hold in Houston and Dallas, Texas.
The initiative, according to information obtained by Diaspora Watch Newspaper, targeted at Nigerians in the diaspora, is designed to ease access to banking services and strengthen financial inclusion among citizens living abroad.
The programme will feature free Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolment, National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment, seamless account opening, account reactivation, and digital banking onboarding.
Diaspora Watch Newspaper further gathered that participants will also benefit from mobile and internet banking activation, instant debit card issuance, and access to mortgage products offered at concessionary rates.
The engagement will further provide a platform for interaction with IT experts, creatives, influencers, and other service exporters, in line with efforts to deepen diaspora participation in Nigeria’s economy.
The Houston leg of the exercise will take place at the Hilton Houston Post Oak by the Galleria on February 24, 25 and 28, 2026, while another session will hold at The Ion, 4201 Main Street, Houston, on February 26 and 27, 2026.
The Dallas session is scheduled for March 3, 4 and 5, 2026, at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel by the Galleria.
Activities are expected to run daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm. Prospective participants have been advised to come along with valid proof of address as stipulated in the registration requirements.
