Eritrea Cuts Ties With Ethiopian Airlines: All Flights Suspended From September 30

In a surprise move, the Eritrean government has announced that it will suspend all flights operated by Ethiopian Airlines, effective September 30. The decision, which was made public on Wednesday, marks a significant escalation in the tensions between the two neighboring countries.
According to a statement released by the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority, the suspension is a result of “unilateral and restrictive measures” taken by Ethiopian Airlines against Eritrean Airlines. The statement did not provide further details on the specific measures that led to the suspension.
The move is expected to have significant implications for travelers and businesses that rely on Ethiopian Airlines for connectivity between Eritrea and the rest of the world. Ethiopian Airlines is one of the largest and most prominent airlines in Africa, and it operates multiple daily flights to and from Eritrea.
The suspension of Ethiopian Airlines flights is the latest development in a series of tensions between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Despite a historic peace agreement signed in 2018, relations between the two countries have remained strained, with disagreements over border demarcation, trade, and security issues.
The Eritrean government has accused Ethiopian Airlines of engaging in unfair business practices and attempting to undermine Eritrean Airlines. Ethiopian Airlines has denied these allegations, stating that it operates in accordance with international aviation standards and regulations.
The suspension of flights is expected to have significant economic implications for both countries. Eritrea relies heavily on Ethiopian Airlines for connectivity to the rest of the world, and the suspension is likely to disrupt trade and commerce between the two countries.
Efforts to resolve the dispute are underway, with officials from both countries engaging in talks to address the issues that led to the suspension. However, with the suspension set to take effect on September 30, time is running out to find a solution.
