Olympic Glory, But No National Pride: Belarusian Athletes Compete As Neutrals
Belarusian trampoline gymnasts Ivan Litvinovich and Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya won Olympic gold and silver medals, but their achievements won’t be recognized in the official medal table. As Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN), they’re among 17 Belarusians competing in Paris without their national flag, colors, or anthem due to their country’s support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) invited eligible athletes from Belarus and Russia to compete as neutrals, meeting strict criteria, including not actively supporting the war and not being contracted to the Russian or Belarusian military.
Litvinovich, 23, defended his title, listening to an IOC-commissioned song instead of the Belarusian anthem. He received congratulations from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko but avoided questions about his past support for the president.
Bardzilouskaya, 19, took silver, receiving praise from the Belarusian Olympic Committee, which is not recognized by the IOC. Eligible Russian athletes are also competing as AINs, with another medal guaranteed in the women’s doubles tennis final.
The IOC’s decision to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete as neutrals has sparked controversy, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arguing it shows “terror is somehow acceptable.”
