Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Shocks Political World With Endorsement Of Donald Trump
In a dramatic turn of events in the 2024 U.S. presidential race, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who launched his campaign as an Independent, has abruptly withdrawn and thrown his support behind Republican nominee Donald Trump. The surprising announcement was made Friday at a press conference in Phoenix, Arizona, where Kennedy, 70, cited his alignment with Trump on pivotal issues like the war in Ukraine as the catalyst for his endorsement.
Kennedy, a lifelong Democrat and a member of the influential Kennedy family, expressed profound disillusionment with his former party. “The principles that led me to leave the party have now compelled me to throw my support to President Trump,” Kennedy said.
In a bid to not undermine Trump’s campaign, Kennedy also revealed plans to remove his name from ballots in ten key battleground states. The endorsement has ignited fierce backlash within the Kennedy family, with his sister, Kerry Kennedy, denouncing it as a “betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear.” Initially focused on anti-vaccine rhetoric and criticisms of the Democratic establishment, Kennedy’s campaign had lost steam in recent months, with his support dwindling as media attention and fundraising efforts faltered.
During a rally in Glendale, Arizona, Trump lauded Kennedy as “phenomenal” and “brilliant,” and reiterated his promise to release all remaining documents related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy—a gesture likely aimed at cementing Kennedy’s endorsement.

Kennedy’s wife, Cheryl Hines, an actress known for her role in HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, expressed respect for her husband’s decision to suspend his campaign but refrained from commenting on his support for Trump. The couple’s differing political views have been a topic of public speculation, with Hines previously distancing herself from some of Kennedy’s more controversial stances.
The endorsement has been met with skepticism by the Democratic Party. Mary Beth Cahill, a senior adviser to the Democratic National Committee, dismissed the endorsement as inconsequential, stating, “Donald Trump isn’t earning an endorsement that’s going to help build support; he’s inheriting the baggage of a failed fringe candidate.”
With Kennedy’s withdrawal, the 2024 election now seems poised as a direct contest between Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. The full impact of Kennedy’s endorsement on Trump’s campaign remains uncertain, but it undeniably adds a new and unexpected dimension to an already contentious race.
