Scientists Predict Earth Days Could Become 25hrs Long As Our Moon Drifts Away
I n a fascinating discovery, scientists have found that the moon’s gradual recession from Earth is slowing down our planet’s rotation, making days incrementally longer. This phenomenon, known as lunar recession, has been occurring for billions of years and will continue to impact Earth’s rotation in the future.
Researchers have predicted that days on Earth could eventually become 25 hours long, but this change won’t happen overnight. In fact, it would take approximately 200 million years for the extra hour to be added to our diurnal cycle. The moon’s drift away from Earth is causing its gravitational impact on our planet to weaken, resulting in a slower rotation.
The moon currently sits about 238,000 miles away from Earth, taking roughly 27.3 days to complete a single orbit around our planet. However, previous research has found that the moon is drifting further away at a rate of about 1.5 inches per year. This means that it will take longer for the moon to move around Earth, leading to a slower rotation.
Scientists have reconstructed the deep history of Earth’s relationship with the moon, finding that days on our planet were shorter billions of years ago. In fact, 1.4 billion years ago, a day on Earth lasted only about 18 hours. This was largely due to the moon’s closer proximity to Earth, causing our planet’s rotation to spin faster.
So, how does the moon’s gravitational impact on Earth’s oceans contribute to the slowing rotation? The moon’s gravity causes ocean water to bulge toward it, creating high and low tides. As Earth rotates, friction from the ocean basins moving beneath pulls the water along, causing the bulges to move slightly ahead of the moon’s orbit. This gradual slowing of Earth’s rotation allows the moon to gain energy and move into a higher orbit.

Other factors, including climate change, are also impacting Earth’s rotation. As global temperatures rise, polar ice is melting faster than ever before, dumping water into Earth’s oceans. This meltwater moves from the poles toward the equator, causing the Earth to grow wider around the middle and slowing its rotation even more.
While the changes are small enough that we won’t notice them in our daily lives, they will add up over millions of years. Eventually, an extra hour will be added to Earth’s diurnal cycle, a result of the moon’s gradual recession from our planet.

Elon Musk’s $1 Million Giveaway Under DOJ Investigation for Potential Legal Violations
Elon Musk’s recent $1 million giveaway has drawn attention from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which is reportedly scrutinizing the legality of the contest. This giveaway, widely promoted on social media, promised substantial cash prizes to select followers but has now raised concerns about compliance with federal sweepstakes laws. The DOJ’s focus is on whether the giveaway followed proper disclosures and legal requirements, including fair entry rules and transparency. This legal scrutiny adds a new layer of complexity to Musk’s ventures, as he continues to attract both media and regulatory attention with high-profile initiatives. The case underscores the importance of adhering to regulations, even in promotional activities led by influential public figures. The outcome could impact future online giveaways hosted by prominent personalities.
