Court Orders Final Forfeiture Of 20 Cars ‘Stolen’ From Canada
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, presided over by Justice Deinde Dipeolu, has ordered the final forfeiture of 20 vehicles stolen from Canada and shipped to Nigeria.
The vehicles, which include various models of Lexus, Mercedes Benz, Toyota, Honda, and Acura, are forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria. The court order comes after a motion on notice filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC had received intelligence from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that over 350 vehicles were stolen from various locations in Canada and shipped to Nigeria. The vehicles were sold on an online website, (link unavailable), and displayed for sale at various car stands across the country.
The EFCC identified the vehicles using their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) and conducted a preliminary investigation. The commission located about 40 of the stolen vehicles, and a final forfeiture order was granted by Justice Dipeolu on March 6, 2024.
The EFCC further located the vehicles listed in schedules 1 and 2 of the application, leading to the present court orders. The vehicles’ VIN corresponds with those of the stolen vehicles contained in the intelligence received from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and no one has come forward to claim ownership.
The investigation revealed that the vehicles were stolen from Canada between March and June 2022. Most of the vehicles were insured, and the insurance companies involved had indemnified the respective owners. The insurance companies delegated their interests to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police liaison officer with the Canadian Embassy in Nigeria to pursue their interests.
Justice Dipeolu’s order grants the EFCC’s application for the final forfeiture of the vehicles. The court also ordered the Canadian Deputy High Commission in Nigeria or any other designated officer to dispose of the forfeited properties either by sale or return to the victims. The EFCC will receive 2% of the proceeds from the disposal.

ExxonMobil Guyana has announced plans to increase oil production from its Stabroek block by 18,000 barrels per day (bpd). The capacity of the Unity floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel will increase from 252,000 bpd to 270,000 bpd, pending approval from local authorities. ExxonMobil Guyana currently produces 665,000 bpd, and future developments include the Hammerhead project, which aims to produce 120,000-180,000 bpd. The company’s investment is set to further strengthen Guyana’s economy as it grows into a major oil producer.
In political developments, President Irfaan Ali has announced several benefits ahead of Guyana’s upcoming elections. The new incentives include free college tuition and a one-time cash handout of nearly $1,000 per household, benefiting 264,000 families. The minimum wage will also increase from $350 to $500 starting next year, aimed at reducing the cost of living for Guyanese citizens.
Guyana’s economy, bolstered by its growing oil sector, saw a remarkable 60% GDP growth in 2022, the highest in the world, according to the IMF. To further utilize oil revenues, the government is launching various infrastructure projects, including hospitals, schools, and a $1.9 billion gas-to-energy initiative.
At the same time, the 115th COTED meeting on agriculture in CARICOM is tackling challenges like climate change and underdeveloped agricultural value chains, working towards the 25 by 2025 Food Security Initiative.
