Catholic Bishops Conference Of Nigeria Cracks Down On Liturgical Abuses
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has issued a sweeping crackdown on liturgical abuses in the Church, banning the use of mobile phones by priests and congregation during mass, as well as the use of Facebook and other social media platforms.
In a circular dated August 15, 2024, the CBCN identified a range of practices that are now prohibited, including:
- Inappropriate importation of secular music into the liturgy
- Abuse of the pulpit for personal gains and settling scores with parishioners
- Indecorous dance, even with the monstrance containing the Eucharist
- Inappropriate dressing for liturgical celebrations by priests and laity
- Arbitrary distortion of the liturgy arising from the desperate quest for inculturation
- Irreverent handling of the Eucharist
- Altering the structure of the liturgy by taking up too many collections and fundraising right in the middle of liturgical celebrations
- Invention of rites in the name of child dedication, with some priests placing a child on the altar against the teaching of the Church that a child is already dedicated to God during baptism.
The CBCN’s decision was announced by the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Most Rev Ignatius Kaigama, during his teaching at St. Theresa’s Parish, Wumba, where he conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 200 parishioners.
Archbishop Kaigama emphasized the importance of the Eucharist in transforming society and arresting moral degeneration, criminality, and corruption. He prayed for the country’s security and the family institution, asking for God’s transformation and intercession through Mother Mary.

The Archbishop also highlighted the need for Catholics to reflect on the gift and values of the family, citing the end of the National Family Week. He urged parents to be available to their children, spend time together, and pray together, rather than encouraging wrongdoing such as cheating and corruption
