President Mahama Unveils ‘Feed Ghana’ Initiative to Transform Agriculture and Bolster Food Security

President John Dramani Mahama has formally inaugurated the Feed Ghana initiative—an ambitious strategy designed to rejuvenate Ghana’s agricultural landscape, foster sustainable food security, and stimulate long-term economic advancement.

The ceremonial launch occurred on Saturday, April 12, in the Bono East Region, a location renowned for its rich soil and high agricultural productivity.

This landmark initiative signals a major shift in Ghana’s approach to farming, with a vision to empower farmers, uplift rural communities, and enhance national development. It aligns seamlessly with the government’s broader commitment to securing Ghana’s agricultural prosperity and tapping into the untapped potential of the country’s fertile regions.

In his keynote speech, President Mahama underscored the indispensable role agriculture plays in Ghana’s socio-economic fabric.

> “Our annual food import bill has soared to an unsustainable $2 billion. Meanwhile, agro-processing industries are functioning well below their potential. Although inflation has receded from a peak of 54% in 2022, it still lingers around 22%,” he remarked.

> “Food prices are the main contributor to the inflation rate. In light of this, my administration is implementing the Feed Ghana program under the overarching theme: Agriculture for Economic Development.”

He characterized the initiative as a holistic effort to modernize farming practices, generate employment, curb food-related inflation, and fortify the country’s food supply chain.

A cornerstone of the program is the establishment of Farmers’ Service Centers in every district. These hubs will offer critical support such as capacity-building workshops, technical guidance, and market intelligence to enhance farmers’ skills and productivity.

President Mahama emphasized that selecting the Bono East Region for the program’s launch was a deliberate decision, acknowledging the area’s significance as a major producer of staple crops such as yam, maize, cassava, cocoyam, rice, plantains, and beans.
