Ghana arrests seven over ‘money bouquets’ Authorities in Ghana have arrested seven women accused of using banknotes to make “money bouquets” and decorate cakes. The Bank of Ghana said the practice amounts to the illegal misuse and improper handling of the country’s currency. The arrests followed a tip-off that led police and central bank officials to raid locations in Accra where the suspects were allegedly selling the decorated banknotes. The Bank of Ghana had in July warned that activities that depreciate, impair or undermine the lawful value and use of the cedi could constitute an offence. An official in the bank’s currency department, Dinah Bonzi, said anyone promoting or assisting such activities could also be arrested and prosecuted. The authorities have also warned against “spraying” money at social events, writing on banknotes, altering them or using them as decorations. The suspects are expected to face prosecution and could be fined or jailed if convicted.
